SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

Future-proof infrastructure for the development of coastal territories

With the conclusion of the first series of publications dedicated to the “phenomena” affecting the world’s coasts, the Seascape journal intends to initiate a new series of issues dedicated to drivers. The Editorial Board, with the support of the Scientific Committee, aims to deepen the characteristics of natural and anthropic systems that allow the “functioning” of coastal areas: accessibility, enjoyment, protection, enhancement, safety, and development. The next issue, the fifth, is dedicated to sustainable mobility, a theme crucial today for improving the socio-ecological conditions of the coastal landscape, the crossing and relationship between interfaces on the sea and inland.
The call is open to professors, researchers, scholars, technicians and professionals. The authors have to send the abstracts according to the indications given below. Each abstract will be subject to a first selection to identify the proposals to be developed in extended articles. The authors of selected abstracts will receive useful indications to proceed with the drafting of the full paper which will subsequently undergo a double blind peer review by the journal’s Scientific Committee and external scholars. The evaluation of the final contributions will focus on: the relevance of the proposal to the topic of the call; the originality of the proposal; the methodology used and innovation produced; the quality of the language and the clarity of the presentation.

How to partecipate

To participate in the Call for abstract it is necessary to send a proposal in Italian or English (one for each applicant and in English – compulsory – for foreigners) within the given time limit and in accordance with the format structured as follows (download here the .docx file):
– Title (maximum 100 characters),
– Subtitle (maximum 150 characters),
– Field of investigation (01/02/03),
– Abstract (maximum 2500 characters),
– Maximum 2 optional images with captions (copyright-free images or including publishing permission by their rightful owner).
The abstract needs to be sent via e-mail to: editorial.seascape@gmail.com bearing the subject: “Abstract –Seascape 05-Surname”. Applications sent differently will be excluded from the evaluation process.

The theme

Mobility is to be understood as a strategic driver for several related aspects: it simultaneously contributes to mitigating climate-altering emissions and adapting to new weather and climatic conditions; it significantly affects the accessibility of territories; it can have profound implications for the quality of natural ecosystems (both terrestrial and marine); it allows for the protection and enhancement of the landscape, its perception, and its resources; it involves new forms of tourism capable of relating coastlines and inland areas; it represents the possibility of realizing a greater sense of well-being by inhabiting the coastal space and transcending any idea of boundaries. With this call, Seascape invites researchers, scholars, educators, and professionals of all levels and types to reflect on a theme that cuts across many fields of knowledge, urging them to intervene in the construction of a strongly transcalar and interdisciplinary issue.

Topic 01 – Mobility along coastal edges

Studies, research, and projects that attempt to relieve coastal areas from the pressures and burdens exerted by the use of private transport, in favor of collective, public, slow, and pedestrian and cycling mobility. For this first topic, contributors are asked to focus on reflections addressing the systemic relationship between private mobility, interchange devices, and sustainable mobility, also through the integration of adaptive infrastructures into landscape and land projects.

Topic 02 – Sustainable mobility and slow tourism between coast and inland areas

The second topic concerns contributions that deliver even partial results of research and projects aimed
at enhancing connections between coasts and inland areas, through planning, design, and construction
of transversal sustainable infrastructures: the characteristics of systems integrated into the territory, the
relationship between mobility, morphology, natural ecosystems, and settlements should be emphasized.
In particular, the contribution that a new generation of infrastructures can give to the connection between different parts of the territory should be made explicit: to enhance identity traits and rediscover hidden resources; to promote the development of slow tourism, based on the programming of complex, thematic, cultural itineraries, and for the voisir.

Topic 03 – Blu mobility

The third and topic addresses the theme of mobility on water and draws attention to the technological and strategic challenges to be faced. European water capitals that have placed orders for the total renewal of their public transport system (boat fleet) opting for electric propulsion; Large shipping companies, both passenger and freight, that have been ordering hybrid diesel-electric and, especially, LNG (natural gas) units for a few years now; Even the cruise market, which apparently condenses the most criticism in terms of sustainability and tourist pressure, now boasts flagships that totally eliminate harmful emissions in port and significantly lower them while at sea.
In particular, contributions are required to focus the attention on the paradigm shifts that bring about these new solutions and that inevitably translate into appreciable changes in coastal logistics and infrastructure: new types of hubs, storage systems, berths that allow bunkering operations that are far from hazard-free, with inevitable repercussions on the perception of the operation at a social and territorial scale.
